THE TANZANIA CHEMICAL SOCIETY (TCS)

This is one of the youngest and admittedly rather few national chemical societies on the African continent. The mission of the Tanzania Chemical Society (TCS) is to foster for the interests of the chemical sciences in Tanzania. TCS publishes The J. Tanzania Chem. Soc. (annually) and a bi-annual TCS newsletter (January and June). TCS is registered with IUPAC as an observer member and information on TCS can be accessed on its internet website:

TANZANIA, ITS PEOPLE, CLIMATE, CULTURE, AND HERITAGE.

Tanzania (pop. about 36 mil.) is a large tropical African country on the Indian Ocean seaboard. Its peoples are sociable, hospitable and friendly. The country is very stable politically with a history devoid of any major upheavals. Dar es Salaam, (pop. about 3.5 mil.) is its largest city and the de facto capital. Tanzania is a land of immense contrasts from hot , humid sea level settings to cold ice-capped alpine mountains e.g. the 19,000 foot Mt. Kilimanjaro. The climate in Dar es Salaam is cool in the month of July. Excellent tourist attractions abound, from the "spice islands" of Zanzibar, undisturbed marine parks and beaches, the largest wildlife concentration in the world and many national parks, some within easy reach of Dar es Salaam.

LANGUAGE

Swahili, the official national language, is spoken throughout Tanzania and the East African region. English is spoken by a large section of the population and is currently the medium of instruction at Universities.

CURRENCY

The unit of currency is the Tanzanian Shilling. One US $ is approximately equivalent to Tanzanian Shillings 700. Dollars and shillings are easily convertible at Banks and Bureau de Change.

COMMUNICATION AND TRANSPORT

Dar es Salaam is served by most major world airlines. Local and regional flights are operated by local and regional airlines. Dar es Salaam airport is about 15 km from the city centre.

IMMIGRATION AND HEALTH

East African nationals and commonwealth citizens require no entry visa into Tanzania. For other nationals, the entry permit is obtainable from the Tanzania embassy/consulate in the respective country. Alternatively, an entry visa can be processed at the point of entry. A valid vaccination certificate against yellow fever is required.

THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME, AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Contributions are sought for topics in all major branches of chemistry and allied fields. The programme will include plenary lectures (50 minutes) by invited speakers, oral presentations (20 minutes), poster sessions and exhibitions. The right to designate a paper as a plenary, oral presentation or poster is the exclusive mandate of the TCS Organizing Committee. The conference venue is the Indian Ocean beach hotel, the Silversands Hotel, Dar es Salaam. The Hotel is situated about 13 kilometres north of the Dar es Salaam city centre and in close proximity to a variety of other beach hotels and resorts.
